Why are we so obsessed with winning?
Why are we so obsessed with winning? It can become such a fixation for us that it colors how we perceive every interaction we have with others. I think I've heard of it happening the most in situations like class reunions, where you haven't seen some people for a long time, and there's this pressure to seem like you've got it together and you're making good - it makes even a simple, innocuous question like, "How are you doing?" seem like a terrible exam that you dread because they're going to look into your soul and either judge you or worship you...
But maybe that's it. Maybe human beings get fixated on getting to the top because we don't want to be judged and we do want to be worshiped, admired, and held in high esteem. It's particularly fascinating that this is such a universal thing, especially because we've got all kinds of stories and examples of people who made it really far in life but whose achievements and earnings left them empty and alone, far, but far away from anything that mattered. And yet...there's this drive to achieve, and this belief that worth comes from what we accomplish.
We like winning, and we dislike losing, because ever since mankind ate the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil we have mistakenly believed that life is about winning and losing. But it isn't. It's about something better, that comes freely and without caring about how you're doing. It's not far away, it's right here.
