Is Passing

A Spotlight Meta-Series

God is love—and not just loving, but love itself: so deeply connected that God is described as three-in-one. Made in that image, we are designed not for isolation but for interdependence. We need each other.
The light God gives helps us find one another, revealing truth not just to us, but for us—so that we can live lives shaped by grace, trust, and unconditional love.

Illume's "...is Passing" series-of-series invites you to look at familiar things through this light: the light of God’s deeply connected, always-reaching love.

About the "…is Passing" Meta-Series

“Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; it’s truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.” (1 John 2:7-8)

Experiencing something in the dark can be radically different from experiencing that very same thing in the light. This is true whether you’re walking through an unfamiliar room or you’re trying navigate the big, complicated topics of life. The difference between experiencing things in darkness and light is the reason there are so many things that seem good, but then can be or (almost inevitably) are used in harmful ways. The “…is Passing” series-of-series explores why and how this happens. Each series reframes an important concept, such as gender or politeness or rightness, by moving the concept from being a law-oriented, control-based idea to being one focused on freedom and grace.

Each series uses the structure of 1 John 2:8 (the bolded words above) to explore this, asking:
  1. What does this seem like in darkness?
  2. In what ways is that version of it passing?
  3. What does this become in the true light?
  4. Where can we see that already shining?

Darkness is Passing

A series on the misconception that light = truth. More than that, On Letting There Be Light is about the misconception that finding truth, loving truth, and aligning oneself with truth is a primary cause of existence. Stated in a positive way, a series on what light really is - the facilitator of beneficial connection.

Rightness is Passing

For realists & cynics who don't feel like they're allowed to roll their eyes, On Letting Out a Sigh provides a way to constructively (and in alignment with God) process that frustration without feeling alone or disobedient because God groans, too.

Politeness is Passing

For everyone recognizing the polarization in society around them who dreams of a way to work together with all people, On Letting Division Cease provides a practical, godly approach to peace-without-uniformity that reflects God's triune nature and the love that brings peace to all mankind.

Recreation is Passing

For those who have yet to experience the goodness of recognizing that God is with you in all things, On Letting the Lord Go With will help you find joy in having a God who is excited to be with you, no matter the circumstance. God is earnest, sympathetic, and present in ways you can't imagine.

Sameness is Passing

For anyone acutely aware of their own weakness who feels helpless, On Letting the Weak Say I Am Strong provides permission to be weak because the weaker you are, the more dependent you can be, the more valuable God becomes, and, therefore, the stronger you are.

Gender is Passing

For those who feel uncertain about their worthiness of love, On Letting Love In offers a path toward seeing and embracing the love that’s already within reach. This series is designed to help you identify and open up to the genuine love that surrounds you, moving beyond the barriers that keep you feeling unlovable.

Forgiveness is Passing

For anyone who is frustrated that their answers aren't enough, On Letting the Almighty Answer provides safety and freedom to keep asking questions by creating space for wondering and believing to exist right alongside authoritative objective reasoning.

Power is Passing

For those who are concerned about the shortness of life and the foreboding ending that is death, On Letting the Dead Rise provides a glimpse into existence that has no expiration date. It paints a picture of living with eternal potential in every interaction and choice.

Time is Passing

You can confess the sins of your people, and you will benefit from it when you do. For anyone who has noticed it’s difficult to talk about race, love, and justice, On Letting Guilt Collect clarifies the conversation by making love—and not laws—the source of true justice.

Achievement is Passing

For gifted, independent people who haven’t yet figured out that they can’t do it all on their own, On Letting Someone Help provides permission to need and ask for help—well before the “last resort”—because interdependence is the dream and independence is an isolating lie.

Membership is Passing

If your goal is "more," you'll never reach it. On Letting Enough be Enough will help you identify the sweet spot between what you can't do without and what you don't really need - and there, find not only joy, but also God himself.

Equality is Passing

For people who like the light and love of God, On Letting the Light Shine provides an easy-to-measure/analyze assessment of the reality of shininess because everything exposed by the light becomes visible and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.
