Just Isn't - Justice is Passing (Part 1 of 4)

Do you have a time when something trivial but unfair happened that still sticks with you?
There are times when a thing people refer to as “justice” is evoked - in the wake of  injustice, in the agony of unfairness, in the defensive response that rises up in anyone who sees what they know to be right be ignored or perverted - but that thing, that “justice,” is a hateful, vengeful desire. As natural as the feelings are and as reasonable as the response seems, the consequence-oriented, quid-pro-quo,  eye-for-eye response  (that is often justified societally) just isn’t justice - or if it is, it just isn’t godly.
Now that you've answered the Icebreaker, here's another question - this one, about a common phrase:
Hopefully that makes enough sense to get you started. As you continue into the Worship portion of the Spotlight, pray this prayer together:

Lord,
Your hands are capable of justice,
but they are not tied by it.
You invented and imparted a sense of justice into us,
but it does not limit you.
Even so, you are never unjust;
for you are always good.
Let us define goodness in you and you alone.

Amen.
First, read responsively the words of Isaiah 59, a chapter that paints a pretty bleak picture of humanity's relationship with justice.
With that in mind, reflect on justice with this guided meditation.
Finish out the Worship section by reflecting on God's relationship with justice using the song "All is Forgiven." You can listen to the song sung by its composer, Pastor Caleb Schmiege, and follow along with the words below.
We were fortunate to have Rev. Mark Parsons of Truth in Love ministries present on their work with people coming out of Mormonism. This video gives a good example of their current strategy.

Pray about This Together

While it's good to put justice in its place, it is not bad at all to desire more justice in our ever unjust world. This is an old, famous prayer for justice. Read the lines together.

God, you have given all peoples on common origin.
It is your will that they be gathered together
as one family in yourself.
Fill the hearts of humankind with the fire of your love
and with the desire to ensure justice for all.
By sharing the good things you give us,
may we secure an equality for all
our brothers and sisters throughout the world.
May there be an end to division, strife, and war.
May there be a dawning of a truly human society
built on love and peace.
We ask this in your name.
Amen.
